Well, my new copy of Wired showed up today, and it contained a “tech timeline” showing the developments that have taken place over the last 10 years. That turned out to be an ad, so I went ahead and modified it slightly to post here.
I was surprised by how blazingly fast the internet has risen to its currently prominent position in just 10 years. Not only that, but by how long Steve and I have been participating in it. He and I both had websites in 1995, and we started devoting serious energy to it by the time we graduated from high school.
I mean, doesn’t that seem weird? Within two years of this technology really coming to power, Steve and I were already actively involved in it. That seems really odd to me. Anyways, enough babbling from me. Here’s the timeline.

Wired magazine is launched.
NCSA Mosaic 1.0 is released.
Doom is released.

Scott and Steve purchases yellow5.com to host a fake band site.
Steve later buys Scott’s share of the domain.
1998
The iMac is released.
Google is launched.
Steve purchases Fojar
Steve starts drawing Pokey the Penguin
1999
Napster is created.
Scott and Miles purchase SpaceNinja.com
Steve purchases hatelife.org
2000
Y2K fizzles.
The human genome is mapped.

Not Really
I didn’t know that Ebay lauched in 1996.
But, Scott: you forgot to put the (sic) next to that that shows you didn’t misspell launch . . .
. . . oh, wait.

smartass
*sigh* here I was, all excited that maybe someone had some actual feedback on my post, and instead I get criticism about a spelling error.
For someone who never has any time to post baby photos, you sure manage to find a lot of time to point out the shortcomings of anything I attempt.

viva us!
this timeline really made me stop and consider how long things have been around. we’ve been involved in this stuff for almost 10 years!! i remember getting my first internet email address some time in high school.. and not really having anyone to email.
i guess being in the thick of it, you don’t notice how time passes. can you imagine how rich we’d be if we’d written forum5000 back in 1995?

prehistory
And before the interweb, there were other “wired” services like Prodigy, Compuserve, and countless indie boards which I was accessing on a 1200 baud modem since I was in junior high… I had my first email address in 1988!
