Propaganda Photos

Some of you may remember Obey Fojar from back in the day, my rather blatant knock-off of the propaganda stylings of Obey Giant. That site isn’t even online anymore, and although I have it archived, I’m not going to restore it because, wow, that’s some bad stuff. Take photo, run posterize photoshop filter, convert colors to black and red, and post as original artwork! *shudder*

Still, the source photos are good for a laugh.

Looking to the Future

While I was going through my photo archives to upload old photos to Flickr, I stumbled across the directory with these photos.

Behold the Future

We took these in the tek room for the express purpose of converting into propaganda images. They were taken with the strong backlight provided by a halogen torch light behind the subject.

All Hail Glorious Leader

The pose was much more important than the actual subject or props used. Since we were in the tek room, we mostly had computer equipment around.

Power to the People

The idea was that we would photoshop the various computer equipment out with more standard communist props like scythes or bushels of wheat.

Sledgehammer

In this case, a t-square stood in for a sledgehammer. In fact, I later submitted that one to Print Magazine for the student cover design competition, and placed for my school.

Alas Poor Yorrick

The skull seems obvious, but I have no excuse for the beard, the pose, or the sound card.

R.I.P. Steve Swor

I just found out that Steve Swor, one of my friends from the radio station, killed himself last week. They found him in his truck in a closed garage on May 15th. He was 38 years old.

Steve and a Sloth

I haven’t seen Steve since Annie and I left Ellensburg a few years ago, but we’d been keeping up on him through Eric and Jill. They would tell us that they’d just heard from him, stomping around in the jungles in South America, or visiting family up in Alaska. He had mentioned several times that he wanted to come through Portland to visit, and we were toying with the idea of doing another radio play with him.

I hope no one thinks this is disrespectful, but Steve will always be “Uncle Scotchy” to me. He got the nickname after splitting a bottle with me at a Robbie Burn’s night party at Eric and Jill’s one year. At the radio station, he was legendary for his deep, gravelly voice. I’m sure anyone else who heard that voice would agree that he had a truly sexy on-air persona. He always had a smile on his face and it seemed like he was constantly off to one party or another.

Here’s to you, Steve. You can be sure we’ll be tipping a glass in your memory every year.

Miles Visits and Scott Angers His Coworkers

Time: 3:48am (press return). Miles has just left my house. Around 9pm tonight (yesterday) Annie checked out a car, and we picked up Miles and Zach (and KT) at KT’s house. On the way to Gustav’s, Miles started telling a story about his housemates which he was only able to finish by the time we left Gustav’s two hours later. We dropped KT off, and Miles suggested renting The Original Kings of Comedy, which we all watched at my house, and were greatly amused by. We had a great time, and were sad to see Miles go. Zach asked if he could crash here for the night, which we agreed to, and I said he could sleep in the middle bedroom (where our computers are set up) after I checked my email.

Now Zach is sleeping in the basement, and I’m still sitting at my computer because I have work to do. I knew this might happen, since Steve and I had a demo assigned to us at a meeting today, which is due tomorrow (today) at 9am (5 hours from now). But since Miles was only in town for one day, I decided to hang out with him and run the risk of coming home to a pile of work needing to be done.

Now I’m facing the same decision I faced so many times in college: With five hours until the project is due, is it better to work now and get three hours of sleep at the end, or sleep now and get up in three hours to do the work? Or is it better to post to KillingMachines and avoid the decision altogether?

DSL, Sprained Ankle, and a Punch to the Face

We’re going to get a DSL connection here at my parent’s house. This will enable me to do work for my new job (did I mention that it’s a telecommuting position?) without having to put up with the 30-second lag time that I sometimes get when working in a telnet window. Hopefully, it will be in within a couple weeks and I can stop surreptitiously working from the tek room. That’s my news. Now on to the rest of my family:

Annie sprained her ankle at work. It was bad enough that yesterday she went to the doctor, who gave her codeine, a brace, and orders to stay off her feet for a few days. She’s currently doped up and sitting in my Dad’s armchair, watching comedy central. But she does seem to be doing well, and the doctor thinks she’ll be doing alright in a matter of weeks.

Ryan gave us a call a few nights ago, letting us know that one of his so-called friends had punched him in the face to convince him not to get married. Apparently, he has a small group of these friends who are convinced that getting married to Molli is the worst possible thing he could do, and when trying to talk him out of it failed, they threatened violence. One of these friends came to visit, and after letting Ryan buy him a drink, walked outside with him and punched him in the face. Then he ran away, shouting profanities behind him. It’s a big mess, and basically we’re all just confused about what’s going on. I’m sure ryan will post the details to his journal at some point, so I’ll let him tell the story on his own.

Plus, Steve’s been sick all week, Miles is on the verge of being deported, and my Mom’s having troubles with her boss. HAPPY OCTOBER, EVERYONE! Things can only get better from here!

I got a Job!

Good News! I got a job! Steve’s boss at webcoach.com has hired me on part-time as a web designer/assistant to Steve. I’m only working 10-15 hours a week right now, and technically, it’s only for 1-2 months, but the boss thinks there’s a good chance that he will get more sales and be able to bring me on full-time. I’m looking into other part-time jobs to supplement this, but I’m hoping it will work out to do this. I spend a great deal of my spare time working on websites with Steve, so why not get paid for it? Thanks again, Steve, for recommending me and sticking up for me!
