Zoe's First Narrative

On Saturday, Zoe had a busy day. It was my dad’s birthday, and there was a family get-together planned at a park in Corvallis. She spent the morning with me while Annie ran errands. Then her cousin Leilani came by with Ryan and Dad to pick up Sean. She was really excited to see Leilani. After Annie got back, we got in the car, and she took a nap on the way to the park, and then played with her older cousins all afternoon. When we got home, she kicked a ball around the backyard with me and Sean before bedtime.

Frequently, while she slowly drifts off to sleep, she will go over her vocabulary. She’ll repeat words she knows or has just learned over and over again, almost chanting to herself. Annie’s gotten used to a bit of random chatter at bedtime, so she didn’t think much about it when Zoe started talking during bedtime that night.

“Papa, Papa?” she said, and Annie nodded and said “Yes, Papa just said night-night to you.” Zoe smiled and went back to nursing.

A minute later she popped back up. “’Lani! ’Lani ’Lani?” Annie said “Yes, we saw Leilani today.”

“Grampa? Ryno?” Zoe continued. “Yes, Grandpa and Uncle Ryan, too.”

Satisfied, Zoe returned to nursing. As she got more sleepy, she talked about the Car (beep-beep!) and Going, and each time Annie smiled and said Yes, and got her to focus on the task at hand again.

But after that, when Zoe started talking about the Ball! and Kicking! and Sean and night-night, Annie realized that she had just recapped her entire day.

Maybe it was just a fluke. As I said, she likes to practice her vocabulary when she’s sleepy, and those are most of the words she knows — but she covered all the major events of the day in chronological order, and I’m inclined to think that she was telling her Momma all about her big day.

Ryan Got Married on Halloween

If my brother is married, then I’m Superman.

Yesterday, sometime before noon on this coast, Ryan and Molli went and got married. They did it at a justice of the peace, and I don’t actually know much more than that because we haven’t spoken since then (he just left us a phone message). Mom said they’re going to do a honeymoon kind of thing at some nice place in the area, but I can’t remember the name. Maybe next time Ryan gets online he’ll reply to this and fill me in.

Last night, Annie and I got together with Daniel to go see Ghostbusters at a theatre pub. Once we got there, we found out the projector was broken, so we made Daniel rent Dude, Where’s My Car? with us. He was somewhat unimpressed, and we, of course, loved it again. This time I noticed that the guy with the ostriches (“Pierre”) is played by Brent Spiner (the guy who played Data on Star Trek).

And today, I created a new icon for Mozilla. Mozilla is the open-source backbone that Netscape is built on. I just installed the latest version on my computer, and I’m very happy with it. It’s much more stable than the last version I tested. The only problem is that it comes with a really ugly icon. It’s blue and gray and I guess it’s supposed to be a gecko (the name of their rendering engine), but it’s hard to tell. So I went to their website, where they have a great red and black logo of a dinosaur, and I created an icon based on that art. I submitted it to the webmaster at the Mozilla site, but I doubt I’ll hear back from them. If you want the icon, you can download it here. (you might have to right click on the link and select “save as”).

DSL, Sprained Ankle, and a Punch to the Face

We’re going to get a DSL connection here at my parent’s house. This will enable me to do work for my new job (did I mention that it’s a telecommuting position?) without having to put up with the 30-second lag time that I sometimes get when working in a telnet window. Hopefully, it will be in within a couple weeks and I can stop surreptitiously working from the tek room. That’s my news. Now on to the rest of my family:

Annie sprained her ankle at work. It was bad enough that yesterday she went to the doctor, who gave her codeine, a brace, and orders to stay off her feet for a few days. She’s currently doped up and sitting in my Dad’s armchair, watching comedy central. But she does seem to be doing well, and the doctor thinks she’ll be doing alright in a matter of weeks.

Ryan gave us a call a few nights ago, letting us know that one of his so-called friends had punched him in the face to convince him not to get married. Apparently, he has a small group of these friends who are convinced that getting married to Molli is the worst possible thing he could do, and when trying to talk him out of it failed, they threatened violence. One of these friends came to visit, and after letting Ryan buy him a drink, walked outside with him and punched him in the face. Then he ran away, shouting profanities behind him. It’s a big mess, and basically we’re all just confused about what’s going on. I’m sure ryan will post the details to his journal at some point, so I’ll let him tell the story on his own.

Plus, Steve’s been sick all week, Miles is on the verge of being deported, and my Mom’s having troubles with her boss. HAPPY OCTOBER, EVERYONE! Things can only get better from here!

Ryan's Getting Married

Last night we got a call from my brother, Ryan. He sometimes posts here and at other sites as Rye Bread. He’s currently living in New York. He decided that college wasn’t doing it for him, and moved to the other coast. None of us were really sure what to make of it, but he seems to be thriving over there, so we’re happy for him.

Anyways, he called last night to tell us that he’s getting married (Now, I didn’t even know that he was living with his girlfriend…). Apparently his friends in New York are less than supportive of his relationship, so they’re planning to just get married at the courthouse on Halloween, and then throwing a wedding party in a few years, “when they know who their friends are.”

I’m afraid I came off poorly on the phone. I tried to be supportive, but I think I ended up sounding skeptical. It was just a little to much to digest all at once that my little brother is engaged. Annie joked that at least we wouldn’t be the first ones to get married, and my family made several jokes hinting that if Annie and I hurry, we could beat him to it.

And in completely unrelated news, Steve had a bad experience getting his new car stereo installed, we completed the new edit page and will have it up soon, and I seem to be a little closer to finding gainful employment.
