Ninja Training

Sorry for so long since the last update, but I’ve been busy with my ninja training. I’ve been spending all my time lately convincing the school that I am, in fact, capable of graduating. They’ve got these strange ideas about it taking “effort” and “work” to graduate. I’m trying to convince them that the qualities of “bullshitting” and “laziness” are worth much more in real world. Oh well. Soon, they’ll see the error of their ways, and then they’ll be sorry. It’s funny to think that somewhere, right now, some sucker just missed the greatest episode of Futurama and X-Files because they were “studying” so they could “pass their classes.” Heh. Chumps.

But don’t think that I haven’t been productive, because I have! Oh, yes. Behold the launch of my online web comic, Hammerspace! It’s my shameless attempt to cash in the rather popular fad among my two friends of having comics. Between Pokey and Isometric, I was feeling very left out. So I decided to make my own comic. It’s done in Final Fantasy style and has naked chicks in it. Check it out!

We all (meaning everyone that I work with and hang out with) went to Shem (my boss)’s party last night. It was great. Nice techno music, beautiful house, lots of food, lots of people, loud conversations. After the party, I downloaded all the MP3s of Pink Martini from our server, because we were listening to them at the party. It was funny, because Annie and KT both came with me, and no one knows them, so they both introduced themselves as being “with Scott,” but KT kept having to clarify that she wasn’t my girlfriend. Then she started confusing people by announcing that she’s Miles’ roommate, which Miles has agreed to, but hasn’t actually happened yet, and it’s occurred to me that this story isn’t nearly as amusing now that I’m relating it to you as when it was happening.

Highlights of the evening: KT getting tackled by one of her professors demanding to know which student has a crush on her, the revealing by one of our co-workers girlfriends that he has a “retarded tattoo” of a scorpion with two left pincers on his back, and Annie falling asleep two hours before we left on the couch.

Radical Ideas

Not much going on right now. School is sneaking up on me, and I suddenly feel an urge to finish tweaking websites. I’ve finished many miscellaneous fixes to my existing websites, and I have several more to complete, including a complete overhaul of spaceninja and reworking the interface for pdxhookup. Hopefully I’ll plow through these before school starts.

I was watching Fiddler on the Roof with Annie the other night, and I noticed something. In the movie, there’s a character who’s just come back from college in “the big city.” He comes home with radical notions such as “women are people” and a strong belief in the proletariat. He ends up leaving to help start the revolution. I noticed that the common stereotype that people who go to college get revolutionary ideas in their heads, and never return to their ordinary lives. To some degree, this must have been true back then. Some people, given a taste of life in the city probably didn’t want to return to the farm. But the stereotype still lingers today, to a degree. Have I picked up on any radical ideas in college? I don’t think so… Maybe I’m just too involved in my life to be able to view it objectively and see my “radical” ideas.

I’m going to order some posters from www.obeygiant.com. They’re awesome russian constructivist/propaganda-style posters. I’m going to hang one up in the tek room. It’ll be great. Steve heard the idea and asked if I’d be interested in designing some Pokey posters in this style, so I’m going to. He said he’d print them if I’d design them.

I’m wearing my Mr. Yuck t-shirt today that Ryan gave me. Mr Yuck rules.

I’m also going to try and start drawing regularly again. I’m going to try and set a regular time two or three times a week where I will sit down for about an hour and just draw. Hopefully this will help me regain my atrophied illustration skills. Now if only I had a darkroom, then I could develop photos.

Lab Boredom

Well, here I am again at work. I’m a little bored. I’ve certainly got plenty to do, but I just don’t have any motivation to do it. I spent a good chunk of yesterday hanging out in the labs with Steve and Miles talking about our projects. It’s so cool when we all get together like that… we all feed off each other’s energy and then we all run back to our computers to quickly do as much work as we can before the excitement wears off. Mac Mutton Kombat is nearly done. It’s Miles’ game, but I sit around with him and try to help, so I feel kinda involved, and it makes happy to see it so near completion. I don’t know how close Steve is to finishing the PC (Linux?) version, but he said it’d be done within two weeks… It looks like Miles and I are going to put up a web page called Mutton Studios, which will be the unofficial official homepage of MK. We’ll post updates, extra stuff, and all sorts of kick ass stuff. On Friday, after movie night, we’re all heading back to the Tek room to record sounds for the games. Steve asked me to create the splash screens for them. He wants a KMFDM album-cover style but with Pokey characters. I did some sketches last night and I think it’s going to look fantastic! Sometime after Friday, Steve and I are going to pull together all the Y5 material, and then it’ll just be a simple matter of waiting for the orders to roll in! We’re offering the CD on Y5 as a post-mortem Dr. Colossus album-in-progress, with a bonus combat game featuring Pokey, and on Pokey we’re advertising it as Mutton Kombat, featuring some sample tracks by Y5! It’s going to rule.

It looks like Annie and I are going to be pulling another three-weeks-apart stint. We were together for a week over spring break, so it shouldn’t be too bad. This weekend is Easter, so we’re getting together with out own families, next weekend, she’s hanging out with her friend Heidi, so we’ll be headed to Tacoma the weekend after for Zach’s birthday. The movie night that I really want to go to is that weekend, which sucks, because that means that I’ll be catching a bus after midnight, and showing up really really early on Saturday, then heading home around dinner time on Sunday. I really hope things work out with her moving to Portland next year. I’m tired of this every-other week thing we’ve got going on.

I feel like writing a story, but I don’t really have one in my head. I’ve got a semi-idea forming about something sorta sci-fi… but as you can no doubt tell by my ambiguity, I’m not too sure what it’s about yet, and the desire to write may very well have left me by the time I figure it out.

All Nighter

It’s 4am. I’m wide awake and in the computer lab. Why am I wide awake? Well, because I stayed up all night last night and didn’t go to bed until 9am, and then got up at 4pm, so I’ve only been up for 12 hours, naturally! Why am I in the computer lab? Well, to be honest, I can’t think of any good reason to leave. I’ve been here since 6pm, the lab closed at 10pm, and I’ve been sort of working on web site stuff ever since then. I haven’t been getting much done, though, since Miles is here, too, and he’s working on “Mutton Kombat,” a Street Fighter style game using Pokey the Penguin characters, and it’s amusing as hell to watch him work on it. The game is just like the comic. Neurotic. I heard Miles state earlier that “We have escaped quality. We have transcended it.” How very true.

I’m wide awake and having fun, and I have every intention of staying here until 8am, when the labs open again. I start working at 10am, so that’s not entirely unreasonable. I think I’ll go get some breakfast with Miles at some point, though.

Finals are finally over, and I don’t have to do anything tomorrow (today) except work. Sometime in the evening, I’m supposed to be picked up by Annie to head to the beach, but plans are still not finalized. She’s still hunting down transportation.

:D There’s something kick ass about fighting a giant snowman with a red devil penguin!
