Quiet Moments

There’s a feeling that you sometimes get… The morning after a really good party. A quiet moment in the backseat of the car three hours into a car trip. Things like that. The feeling is really hard to describe. I guess if I had to put a word on it, it would be peaceful. Happiness, to a degree, but mostly peace. Like all your troubles have been lifted for a little while, leaving you completely undisturbed.

It seems like you almost need to be half asleep for this, but not always. I remember lying in the backseat of a car the morning after a cool party. There were two other people in the car, but it was a quiet moment between conversations. Burn by Sister Machine Gun was playing, and I misheard the chorus to say “You’re like a butterfly… and I’ll never be the same.”

It mostly seems to happen after good parties, when you’ve just spent the entire night talking to someone cool. I remember practically floating home the morning after I met Annie at a party her brother threw. I had the guitar solo of the Sublime song Right Back in my head and all was right with the world.

Last night, after my friends went home, I sat down on the bed and finished reading an Asimov book. While I was reading it, Annie came in and fell asleep next to me and the CD that was playing finished. I decided to go to bed and put in a Sarah Maclachlan CD. As Sweet Surrender came on, I was lying in bed, looking at the light clouds in the sky and thinking about how much light the city was shining in our window. I was wide awake and I felt completely at peace.

Sitting on a bench at the beach, just watching the endless roll of waves.

Standing on the roof of my apartment building watching fireworks go off over the cityscape spread out below my and my fellow trespassers.

Lying on the grass in a section of town I’d never been in, with a girl I didn’t know, looking at the stars.

Wandering through the neighborhood with a high school friend several late nights, discussing nothing in particular.

Ninja Training

Sorry for so long since the last update, but I’ve been busy with my ninja training. I’ve been spending all my time lately convincing the school that I am, in fact, capable of graduating. They’ve got these strange ideas about it taking “effort” and “work” to graduate. I’m trying to convince them that the qualities of “bullshitting” and “laziness” are worth much more in real world. Oh well. Soon, they’ll see the error of their ways, and then they’ll be sorry. It’s funny to think that somewhere, right now, some sucker just missed the greatest episode of Futurama and X-Files because they were “studying” so they could “pass their classes.” Heh. Chumps.

But don’t think that I haven’t been productive, because I have! Oh, yes. Behold the launch of my online web comic, Hammerspace! It’s my shameless attempt to cash in the rather popular fad among my two friends of having comics. Between Pokey and Isometric, I was feeling very left out. So I decided to make my own comic. It’s done in Final Fantasy style and has naked chicks in it. Check it out!

We all (meaning everyone that I work with and hang out with) went to Shem (my boss)’s party last night. It was great. Nice techno music, beautiful house, lots of food, lots of people, loud conversations. After the party, I downloaded all the MP3s of Pink Martini from our server, because we were listening to them at the party. It was funny, because Annie and KT both came with me, and no one knows them, so they both introduced themselves as being “with Scott,” but KT kept having to clarify that she wasn’t my girlfriend. Then she started confusing people by announcing that she’s Miles’ roommate, which Miles has agreed to, but hasn’t actually happened yet, and it’s occurred to me that this story isn’t nearly as amusing now that I’m relating it to you as when it was happening.

Highlights of the evening: KT getting tackled by one of her professors demanding to know which student has a crush on her, the revealing by one of our co-workers girlfriends that he has a “retarded tattoo” of a scorpion with two left pincers on his back, and Annie falling asleep two hours before we left on the couch.

Flying Karamazov Brothers

Last night I went to see the Flying Karamazov Brothers again. They’re an amazing juggling act that started on the streets of San Francisco. They do an act that is focused on puns and expressing music visually. The last time I saw them was at the Civic with Steve, and they were amazing. They made mistakes, but they had a whole repertoire of jokes to cover themselves. It was awesome. They weren’t quite up to par last night, though. I’m not sure how much that has to do with my having seen it before, and how much was due to them not doing too well. They seemed to make a lot more mistakes, and mess up their lines, and just not cover it up nearly as well. Still, on the whole, it was a cool show. Steve and I talked Miles and Annie into coming with us, and they both seemed to get a kick out of it.

Today I cleaned the tek room. It was really a big mess, but after about four hours, it looks much better. Got the shelves cleaned off, got the equipment straightened up, and the garbage taken out. Now if they just vacuum the room, it’ll look really sharp!

That’s about all my news for now. Nothing much else going on.

Portfolio

I got my portfolio all updated today. The itch to redesign all my personal sites has been hitting me again lately. I found a good design online and pretty much stole it wholesale for my portfolio site. I would feel bad about it on any other site, but since all the content on that site is designs that I’ve done, I don’t mind that the framework is based on another site. It’s funny how much of design is outright copying. You put your own twist on it, and call it an homage, and you’re good to go! Anyway, check it out when you get a chance. I also reworked this site a little. Nothing major, I just put all the entries from 1999 in a subdirectory to keep things cleaner.

Portfolio v1

We’ve been watching a lot of movies lately. I saw American Pie, which was really funny, but also really hard to watch. Some of the scenes just make you cringe. I rented Iron Giant and ended up keeping it an extra night so I could watch it with Annie. It’s amazing. What a great movie. It’s really not a kid’s movie, and besides, nothing tops a 100-foot-tall robot pretending to be Superman. I’m also going to see Supernova this weekend with my brother Sean. We both think it’ll be fun, but just in case it sucks we want to go with someone we can taunt the movie with.

I’m broke again. I think it’s my own fault, and not the bank’s, but after new year’s, I’m not sure. Either way, it means no buying a new coat or visiting Fry’s until payday. sigh.

Before I went broke, though, I thought I had lots of money and bought the expansion pack for Half-Life, and it’s great! It’s almost as good a game as the original. I’m totally into it right now, and it’s going to be hard to not neglect my schoolwork in favor of playing it.

Son Of A Gun

“WATCH OUT! SON OF GUN! SUPER-HERO-NUMBER-ONE!!”
– kmfdm – son of a gun

I’m excited. It’s really really cool when someone that you’ve admired for awhile suddenly writes you an email saying great stuff. About a year ago, Steve showed me a link to this guy’s website. It’s the “best damn web page in the universe.” It’s just a big page of rants by the guy, and I love it. I check it out every few weeks to see if he’s added a new one and it just cracks me up. So I added a link on my website to his page.

Today, at work, bored, I visited his site to see if he updated, and he’d done some large overhauls. Among the many changes, he had added me to his page of links. I was amazed. I’ve never spoken to the guy before, just viewed his website and linked to it, and now he was linking to me! “Great design, cool overall.” I showed Miles, and we concluded that he must have found my site through watching his access logs and seeing the link on my page.

So I decided to drop him and email and thank him for linking to me. I also told him that Steve named his server after one of the rants on his site! (Fojar comes from the article called “Let’s blow up the moon!“) Within a half hour, I had an email back from him. I’m just going to post it here:

Hey Scott, I’m glad to finally be in touch with you guys. A long time ago I noticed some links in my access log from people coming to my site with http://spaceninja.com/home/links.html. It’s ironic that you like my site, as I often find myself going to spaceninja.com for web design ideas and to show my friends examples of how web pages should look.

I’m thrilled that your server is named fojar. My friend and I were just talking about the word “fojar” the other night, and I couldn’t remember where I had used that word before (we have code words for everything)! I checked out fojar.com, and the art/style is awesome. Unfortunately, I don’t have a Mac and wasn’t able to check out Mutton Kombat. What’s it written in? By the way, is all the art on fojar done by you? That “MUTTON KOMBAT” gif on the play.fojar.com page reminds me of the style on Batman the animated series. Very cool. Anyway, that link I have to spaceninja doesn’t do you guys justice, I’ll have to update my links when I get a chance. Talk to you later,

I’m stunned. Here I am, admiring this guy, and he’s writing me an email saying that he likes the stuff I do! Miles saw me getting excited and said to Mark that he didn’t think I would be any more excited if I got a letter from Milla Jovovich herself! (we just watched fifth element last night).

If I babble about this any more, I’m just going to sound like a moron, so I’m going to shut up and just say that I’m excited.

In case you’re curious, yes, I did all the art on fojar, and the mutton kombat image is kmfdm album-cover style.
