Ryan Got Married on Halloween

If my brother is married, then I’m Superman.

Yesterday, sometime before noon on this coast, Ryan and Molli went and got married. They did it at a justice of the peace, and I don’t actually know much more than that because we haven’t spoken since then (he just left us a phone message). Mom said they’re going to do a honeymoon kind of thing at some nice place in the area, but I can’t remember the name. Maybe next time Ryan gets online he’ll reply to this and fill me in.

Last night, Annie and I got together with Daniel to go see Ghostbusters at a theatre pub. Once we got there, we found out the projector was broken, so we made Daniel rent Dude, Where’s My Car? with us. He was somewhat unimpressed, and we, of course, loved it again. This time I noticed that the guy with the ostriches (“Pierre”) is played by Brent Spiner (the guy who played Data on Star Trek).

And today, I created a new icon for Mozilla. Mozilla is the open-source backbone that Netscape is built on. I just installed the latest version on my computer, and I’m very happy with it. It’s much more stable than the last version I tested. The only problem is that it comes with a really ugly icon. It’s blue and gray and I guess it’s supposed to be a gecko (the name of their rendering engine), but it’s hard to tell. So I went to their website, where they have a great red and black logo of a dinosaur, and I created an icon based on that art. I submitted it to the webmaster at the Mozilla site, but I doubt I’ll hear back from them. If you want the icon, you can download it here. (you might have to right click on the link and select “save as”).

Started Physical Therapy

oh man, do I feel better, I’ve started physical therapy for my ankle, begun exercises at home and got a wee bit o’ cash from workers comp. now of course I have to slog through the paperwork, but like I have anything but time on my hands. :)

it also means I have to report it to the food stamp place with more paperwork, but such is life.

mmm… paperwork… so mind-numbingly delicious… mmm…

I finally made a dress I’ve had waiting for me since this summer and it’s awesome! I’ll wear it at thanksgiving so everyone can tell me how talented I am. heehee!

On monday I get to help out at growing gardens sorting pictures and seeds and such. rad. I’m such a sucker for other people’s menial labor, I swear. I really truly love pulling ivy, it’s so satisfying….maybe I should start a side business…hmm…

Sooo…scott’s LITTLE brother is getting married on halloween over in NYC and it’s freaky. we’re all pretty cool with it and everything, but he’s MY little brother’s age! 20! mostly I’m just really jealous that someone else in the family is getting married before me. ;) it’s a little hard to take in. it sucks that I don’t feel like doing anything for halloween this year, I’m really not up to much except lying around and being waited on or being driven places where I can have a good time and don’t have to walk much.

it was crazy last night I had to ask scott’s parents to drop us off and pick us up at a movie because of my ankle. it sucks when you can’t even drive on your own date. and believe me we were going to go on a date whether scott liked it or not! :) oh no! my girlfriends taking me out for pizza & beer and a funny movie! (Jay & silent bob) whatever shall I do? wherever shall I go? what’s to become of me?! haha. he liked it.

It’s been kind of a weird mix, going to see offensive guy movies and reading lots of magazines like BUST, and Ms., and Bitch. I was at our local non-profit women’s book store buying a wonder woman address book when I spotted a box of free mags. score. I loaded up on old issues of MS. to see what was going on ten years ago… the same things that are going on now! who knew? ;)

anyway, the stuff is really interesting, and all boys should read these kinds of magazines. Scott even read “the vagina monolouges” without any prompting from me! and then I loaned it to his friend! boys are so surprising sometimes, that’s why I love ‘em…

DSL, Sprained Ankle, and a Punch to the Face

We’re going to get a DSL connection here at my parent’s house. This will enable me to do work for my new job (did I mention that it’s a telecommuting position?) without having to put up with the 30-second lag time that I sometimes get when working in a telnet window. Hopefully, it will be in within a couple weeks and I can stop surreptitiously working from the tek room. That’s my news. Now on to the rest of my family:

Annie sprained her ankle at work. It was bad enough that yesterday she went to the doctor, who gave her codeine, a brace, and orders to stay off her feet for a few days. She’s currently doped up and sitting in my Dad’s armchair, watching comedy central. But she does seem to be doing well, and the doctor thinks she’ll be doing alright in a matter of weeks.

Ryan gave us a call a few nights ago, letting us know that one of his so-called friends had punched him in the face to convince him not to get married. Apparently, he has a small group of these friends who are convinced that getting married to Molli is the worst possible thing he could do, and when trying to talk him out of it failed, they threatened violence. One of these friends came to visit, and after letting Ryan buy him a drink, walked outside with him and punched him in the face. Then he ran away, shouting profanities behind him. It’s a big mess, and basically we’re all just confused about what’s going on. I’m sure ryan will post the details to his journal at some point, so I’ll let him tell the story on his own.

Plus, Steve’s been sick all week, Miles is on the verge of being deported, and my Mom’s having troubles with her boss. HAPPY OCTOBER, EVERYONE! Things can only get better from here!

Ryan's Getting Married

Last night we got a call from my brother, Ryan. He sometimes posts here and at other sites as Rye Bread. He’s currently living in New York. He decided that college wasn’t doing it for him, and moved to the other coast. None of us were really sure what to make of it, but he seems to be thriving over there, so we’re happy for him.

Anyways, he called last night to tell us that he’s getting married (Now, I didn’t even know that he was living with his girlfriend…). Apparently his friends in New York are less than supportive of his relationship, so they’re planning to just get married at the courthouse on Halloween, and then throwing a wedding party in a few years, “when they know who their friends are.”

I’m afraid I came off poorly on the phone. I tried to be supportive, but I think I ended up sounding skeptical. It was just a little to much to digest all at once that my little brother is engaged. Annie joked that at least we wouldn’t be the first ones to get married, and my family made several jokes hinting that if Annie and I hurry, we could beat him to it.

And in completely unrelated news, Steve had a bad experience getting his new car stereo installed, we completed the new edit page and will have it up soon, and I seem to be a little closer to finding gainful employment.

Speaking of Earthquakes

Lately I haven’t been posting as frequently as I used to, because it doesn’t feel like much happens around here. I go to work every day, I hang out with Eric and Jill a lot, and that’s about it. I’ve been rereading MicroSerfs, though, and I’m filled with the desire to post short, humorous stories about things that happen to me and the people I know, but not a lot has been happening.

For anyone who’s interested, the earthquake in Olympia did effect us here in Ellensburg. According to my dad, it was measured at 4.8 in Portland, and I think we got about the same here. It was a long (nearly a minute) side-to-side motion, and afterward, they evacuated all the buildings on campus to check for damage.

Speaking of earthquakes, lately, it seems to be a trend among people we know to ask when Annie and I are getting married. I guess when you date someone for nearly three years, and you’re not in high school anymore, everyone assumes that’s what’s next. The funny thing is that it doesn’t bother me as much as I thought it would. I think Annie and I will get married at some point, but it’s not like we’ve made firm plans about it. We do joke about what our wedding will be like, though.

The other day, in fact, as Annie and I were watching Friends, and they were talking about weddings, we started talking about it, and she casually mentioned that maybe she didn’t even want a minister at ours.

“We just say our own vows. It’s really romantic,” she said. Now, I’m fairly open about what she wants at our wedding. My take on the whole thing is that this a mostly for her, so let her do what she wants with it. And while neither one of us is very religious, and we don’t want a huge god-fearing ceremony, I do want someone to run the ceremony. As I told Annie, without a minister, it’s basically just a party, not a wedding (yes, I know legally we would still be married, but that’s not the point).
