Just Give Me a Minute to Catch My Breath

In the last week:

  • Annie’s grandmother died
  • Zoe spent her first period of time apart from Annie (3 days)
  • Burrito (our cat) is not eating, which is how her sister started deteriorating before we had to put her down.
  • I worked a 66-hour work week
  • Our friend Eric was in a motorcycle accident (he’s got road rash, but is otherwise okay)
  • Annie’s dad and brother Zach totaled a car trying to get to the funeral (they’re fine, the car is not)
  • Annie strained her knee, and is on crutches

Our friends and family have been overwhelmingly supportive, and we’ve managed to scrape together enough money to cover the unexpected doctor and veterinarian bills, so we’re doing well, but are mentally and physically exhausted. Tomorrow morning we’re driving to Walla Walla for the funeral. We’re coming back on Sunday, and then I’ve got a couple days off so we can slow down a bit and try to regain our sanity.

Miles Visits and Scott Angers His Coworkers

Time: 3:48am (press return). Miles has just left my house. Around 9pm tonight (yesterday) Annie checked out a car, and we picked up Miles and Zach (and KT) at KT’s house. On the way to Gustav’s, Miles started telling a story about his housemates which he was only able to finish by the time we left Gustav’s two hours later. We dropped KT off, and Miles suggested renting The Original Kings of Comedy, which we all watched at my house, and were greatly amused by. We had a great time, and were sad to see Miles go. Zach asked if he could crash here for the night, which we agreed to, and I said he could sleep in the middle bedroom (where our computers are set up) after I checked my email.

Now Zach is sleeping in the basement, and I’m still sitting at my computer because I have work to do. I knew this might happen, since Steve and I had a demo assigned to us at a meeting today, which is due tomorrow (today) at 9am (5 hours from now). But since Miles was only in town for one day, I decided to hang out with him and run the risk of coming home to a pile of work needing to be done.

Now I’m facing the same decision I faced so many times in college: With five hours until the project is due, is it better to work now and get three hours of sleep at the end, or sleep now and get up in three hours to do the work? Or is it better to post to KillingMachines and avoid the decision altogether?

DSL, Sprained Ankle, and a Punch to the Face

We’re going to get a DSL connection here at my parent’s house. This will enable me to do work for my new job (did I mention that it’s a telecommuting position?) without having to put up with the 30-second lag time that I sometimes get when working in a telnet window. Hopefully, it will be in within a couple weeks and I can stop surreptitiously working from the tek room. That’s my news. Now on to the rest of my family:

Annie sprained her ankle at work. It was bad enough that yesterday she went to the doctor, who gave her codeine, a brace, and orders to stay off her feet for a few days. She’s currently doped up and sitting in my Dad’s armchair, watching comedy central. But she does seem to be doing well, and the doctor thinks she’ll be doing alright in a matter of weeks.

Ryan gave us a call a few nights ago, letting us know that one of his so-called friends had punched him in the face to convince him not to get married. Apparently, he has a small group of these friends who are convinced that getting married to Molli is the worst possible thing he could do, and when trying to talk him out of it failed, they threatened violence. One of these friends came to visit, and after letting Ryan buy him a drink, walked outside with him and punched him in the face. Then he ran away, shouting profanities behind him. It’s a big mess, and basically we’re all just confused about what’s going on. I’m sure ryan will post the details to his journal at some point, so I’ll let him tell the story on his own.

Plus, Steve’s been sick all week, Miles is on the verge of being deported, and my Mom’s having troubles with her boss. HAPPY OCTOBER, EVERYONE! Things can only get better from here!

Ryan's Getting Married

Last night we got a call from my brother, Ryan. He sometimes posts here and at other sites as Rye Bread. He’s currently living in New York. He decided that college wasn’t doing it for him, and moved to the other coast. None of us were really sure what to make of it, but he seems to be thriving over there, so we’re happy for him.

Anyways, he called last night to tell us that he’s getting married (Now, I didn’t even know that he was living with his girlfriend…). Apparently his friends in New York are less than supportive of his relationship, so they’re planning to just get married at the courthouse on Halloween, and then throwing a wedding party in a few years, “when they know who their friends are.”

I’m afraid I came off poorly on the phone. I tried to be supportive, but I think I ended up sounding skeptical. It was just a little to much to digest all at once that my little brother is engaged. Annie joked that at least we wouldn’t be the first ones to get married, and my family made several jokes hinting that if Annie and I hurry, we could beat him to it.

And in completely unrelated news, Steve had a bad experience getting his new car stereo installed, we completed the new edit page and will have it up soon, and I seem to be a little closer to finding gainful employment.
