Before that was “The Passenger” by Iggy Pop and “Paper-Thin Walls” by Modest Mouse. Coming up, I’ve got music from the Ataris, Hooverphonic and Sleater-Kinney. If you’ve got anything you wanna hear, you can call our request line at 963-2311, or go online at www.881theburg.com. I’ve got a few quick messages before I kick you back into the music with “Judith” by A Perfect Circle, so keep it here.”

I miss that. Who wants to start a radio station with me?

Tom Craven Died

Some of you may have seen the story in the news about the four firefighters who died fighting a forest fire in Washington. I saw the story on the news this morning, and then opened my email to find this note from the general manager of the radio station Annie and I volunteered at in Ellensburg.

Subject: Loss of a dear DJ and friend

Dear all,
This is to let you know, if you haven’t yet heard, that we lost Tom Craven last night (Tuesday, July 10th, 2001). Aside from being a very well-loved and respected DJ here at The ‘Burg, he was a long-time firefighter during peak fire season every year.

He was fighting a blaze that started small and erupted suddenly into a 2,500 acre nightmare. Unfortunately, Tom and 3 others were overtaken by the blaze and were killed sometime around 6pm. The fire was apparently started by an unattended campfire. I understand a national investigative task force will soon be looking further into the cause of the fire.

We at The ‘Burg are all very saddened by this news. Tom was a true friend, and many of you remember how dedicated he was to his weekly rap and hip-hop show called “Off ‘Da Hook” since he signed on board with us in the Fall of 1997.

It goes without saying that he will be greatly missed. Tom leaves behind his wife Evelyn and two young children, a daughter and a son. …The family will need time to grieve and not be overwhelmed by phone calls, which is why I am not giving out the phone number.

Thank you, and sorry for the bad news. Those of you who knew Tom, please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers.

I wasn’t close with Tom (or Crave, as we called him at the station), but I always said hi to him, and on the occasions where we did speak, he was always very nice. Lots of people on the radio turn out to be jerks in real life, but everyone liked Crave. He was a cool guy who always seem genuinely friendly. He’ll be missed.

Work Troubles

HOORJ. I am frustrated. I got in trouble at work today. Not bad trouble, but my boss has warned me twice (once kinda sneakily) that I’m spending too much time on the Net at work, and today he announced that he’s disconnecting my computer from the network. I’ve got no grounds to argue with him, since that computer doesn’t have to be on the network, but it’s a crummy thing to do, especially since the last time he mentioned that he thought I was on the net too much was like three months ago. I wish he would have given me more warning that he was that close to doing something like this. I dunno, I mean I understand where he’s coming from with not wanting to pay for me to goof off, but the way I feel is that if I do my job well, get all my work done in a timely fashion (which I do) then I should be allowed a little slack. He feels differently. Yet another reason I wanna get out of this shit town and back to a place where more people share my opinions.

In addition to that, Urn and I did a really bad show last night, and the station manager told us so. He’s right, but when you did the best you could and still failed it kinda sucks to have someone critisize it. We were trying something new, and it bombed, unfortunately. Oh well… we’re gonna try twice as hard for the next show and hopefully have better results.

Agggh. On the one hand, I hate getting criticism, because it makes me feel bad, and on the other hand, I hate when people don’t tell me, like my boss. You know, I wanna know if someone has a problem with me so I can work on it, but at the same time, I hate when people have a problem with me, because then I feel like shit.

Ooog. Enough ranting.

Taking Things Too Seriously

Some people take things too seriously. It always amazes me when I see how stressed out people get over the smallest things in their lives. It’s like “HEY! You’re alive! You’ve got friends! You’ve got food to eat and a roof over your head! Lighten up!” But of course, I don’t say stuff like that to people, because I’m a big fscking hypocrite. :)

On a completely unrelated note, our first radio show went amazingly well. I was pretty nervous when we got into the studio, but by a half hour into the show, I felt 100% better. We still have plenty of room to improve, but WE CAN DO IT, which I wan’t entirely sure of, before. This show is going to rule. Next project: Fliers and a website for it.

Computer status: Annie’s is still toast, as I’ve found no time yet where I could get Urn to help me without getting him in trouble. ;) My computer is working fine, despite the complete and total lack of all my graphics files. :(

Jester contacted me, and the themes have been approved with one final revision to be made, which I’ll have to do tonight. Then, as soon as they get the installer made, they’ll post it on the website. Hooray!

Also, I need to start making new hammerspace strips. I’ve got a bunch of ideas. :)

Back Once Again With The Renegade Master!!!

Yarr, that’s right, I’ve returned! Christmas was a blast. Annie and I went to Tacoma, and hung out with her family for awhile, then I went to Portland with my family for awhile, and then back to Tacoma for a week of network gaming fun with Annie’s brothers and cousins! Hooray!

While in Portland, Steve and I hooked up with Miles and went to Chu’s, and discussed our top-secret plans for Studio Fojar. Oh, and Miles got me the coolest geek gift ever, although I’m not sure he got it due to the geek qualities of it. He got me a ninja throwing star! It’s totally cool, so I immediately hung it on the wall over my computer like the guy in Neuromancer did. It’s a totally rad gift, and it made me feel like a complete ass for not getting him anything. But I’m making plans for a birthday gift. Oh ho! I will not be defeated! When did this turn into a contest? I don’t know, but I’m going to win!

Network gaming was awesome as well. I think at one point we had 8 computers hooked together and 6 guys playing Quake 3. Everyone seemed to enjoy it, and I think we might do it again on the next break that everyone’s home for.

I bought the expansion pack for the Sims, and discovered, to my dismay, that it doesn’t work on Windows 2000, even though the regular game does! Solution: partition my hard drive and create a 98/2K dual boot, which I’ve been meaning to do anyways.

In the process of upgrading my machine’s drivers to prepare for this, I was upgrading Annie’s computer as well. While trying to flash the video card’s BIOS to a new version, the computer crashed and now the video card doesn’t give a signal to the monitor at all. Tech Support says all I have to do is put the card in a friend’s computer (who has a different video card) and flash the bios again. I’m gonna get Urn to help me. “Come on, Urn, I doubt the same thing would happen twice! I’m sure your computer will be fine!”

Tomorrow, I return to work, sort of. We’re starting the process of moving everything to the new location. More nerve-wracking than that, though, is the fact that Urn’s and my first radio show is tomorrow night. I’m really nervous about it, and it doesn’t help that Urn is nowhere to be found, so I don’t know how prepared he is, or if he set up our first interview. :(
