“Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I answer all my children’s letters — sometimes very hastily — but this one I lingered over. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it.”

Coloring on the Window
Over the holidays, Zoe spent a lot of time with her cousins. Since she’s an only child and the only girl in the group, it’s pretty interesting to watch how differently she reacts to situations. In general, she’s delighted to see the boys’ high energy and rough-housing, and she likes to join in. Unfortunately, she hasn’t had to get as tough as Milo or Theo, and inevitably, it ends in tears. But once she gets calmed down, she never hesitates to dive back into the fray.
This particular photo was taken on a day when just Milo and Zoe were hanging out. It’s interesting how the dynamic shifts when it’s just the two of them. They’re the same age, and they tend to play at about the same speed. They had these crayons designed for kids to color on the windows, and they were happily scribbling away for about 20 minutes together.
Clipping Zoe's Toenails
Since Zoe was very little, it’s been my job to clip her nails. The funny thing is, you would expect a small child to resist this, but Zoe has always been fascinated with the whole process. She sits calmly in my lap, and holds out her hands and feet. Once she got big enough, we had to strike a deal where she gets to carry around the clippers for a few minutes once I’m done. I’m not sure what the appeal is for her, other than OOH SHINY, but I’m glad she lets me do it.
Zoe Eats the Bottom First
The very first thing anyone ever said about our daughter was that “she’s got a mind of her own!” That was the ultrasound technician, back when Zoe was still in the womb, but it’s just as true today. No matter what we’re doing, she’ll find a way to put her own spin on it. Here she is at a friend’s birthday party. This being only the second or third cupcake she’s ever seen in her life, she was unsure how to approach it, and finally opted to grab it from the top, and eat the bottom first. A bit messy, but hey, to each her own.
Zoe Running on the Beach
Zoe was a little young for the beach last year, but we’ve managed to take her a few times this year, and she’s always very excited. She loves playing in the sand and even (with a bit of coaxing) splashing in the creek — though she refuses to touch the actual ocean, and when it gets too windy she wants us to hold her the whole time.
After one trip to the beach, I knew it had made a big impression when she started telling me one night about her plans: “I go to the beach! I play in the sand! I put my feet in the ocean! I splash Mama!” (this last was accompanied by uproarious laughter.)
This video is of Zoe running back to where Annie’s lying in the sand after I tried to get her to walk into the ocean. You can tell she’s having a great time because she’s so excited that every few feet, she runs back and forth and flops into the sand.
