Steve and I have become

Steve and I have become somewhat obsessed with our junk mail filters lately, and as a result, I find myself looking through my inbox at the spam that slipped through my filters, analyzing it for weaknesses.

The latest irritating trend that I’ve noticed is spam being sent from MY email address. I thought nothing of it at first, figuring it was some sort of spam trickery, to set the from address to match the address of the person reading it… but recently I received some “address rejected” letters from the servers of the people that were spammed using my email!

This pisses me off so much. Does anyone have any ideas about how I could possibly prevent someone from using my address in this way?

Yes … set your mail server so it doesn’t relay email. That’s one of the ways this happens.

Also, you correct that SPAM often spoofs the return address … putting the recipients address in there, so it looks like you’ve sent mail to yourself. Some of your SPAM probably *IS* just that.

No. They can fake up the From: header any way they want. You could change to a different Pine role (or whatever) when sending mail to servers that block your primary address. Maybe.

Or you could drop a small planetoid on top of one of the organizations listed here.

Actually, the root cause of spam is an economic system based on property, but don’t try telling that to anyone.

Down with property! We can all share. Sharing is fun.
