In high school, my buddy Colin and I played table-top war games. These are not Role Playing Games like Dungeons and Dragons. There is no pretending to be anyone else. These games are more like playing a war game on your computer, such as Starcraft or Age of Empires, only with miniatures and dice, and a lot slower, and in most cases, not as much fun.

We loved it. It was a completely irrational pursuit, because it cost a lot of money to buy all the little miniatures and all the expansion packs to the games and we never had enough time to paint them right, and we got tired of only playing each other, but we hated everyone else who played. Nevertheless, we loved it, and over the years, we sank several hundred dollars into this hobby. The end result is that for the last two years we haven’t played at all, since we now have other hobbies, and the games have been gathering dust at our houses.

So last night Colin and I decided to sell the games. I made up some fliers saying that we would sell each game with complete armies for $20 each. This is a completely rediculous price. Each game with all the miniatures (ignoring the fact that they’re used) is worth a couple hundred. Selling for $20 has the benefit that they will definitely sell, and sell quickly, netting us about $80 total in quick cash to spend on booze and fast women.

Even though I know that I’m never going to play these games again, I feel kinda like I’m shooting myself in the foot as I box up these games, with years of effort put into gathering the parts and all the hours spent on painting those little tiny miniatures. I’m sure it’s the right thing to do, since someone else will get some pleasure from having them, and this will allow some kid who’s just getting into the game to get going really cheap, but it feels weird anyway.
