I found the coolest computer store in the world today. No more will I shop at Fry’s, or on the Internet.
I was putting together my new computer last night. I had ordered nearly all the parts off the internet a few weeks ago and forced myself not to put it together until finals were over, because it would distract me. So I go to put it together, and I’m missing the following:
-audio cable from CD-ROM to sound card
-PCI network card (all mine are ISA)
-heatsink for my Athlon processor
That last one is super-important. The Athlon processors have some major heat issues, and I was seriously worried I would destroy the chip if I ran it without. So I had to wait a few more hours and put more money into it to get those components. This morning I call the three computer parts stores near me. One doesn’t have anything, and one has them for too much. The one nearest me doesn’t answer the phone, so I decide to walk by before I hit the place that has everything.
It’s called Computek, and they’re just two blocks away. I wander in and list what I need, and the guy goes in the back and retrieves the stuff. He brings out parts that almost look like they’ve been used… but he’s selling them for half what the other store is charging, and I’m poor.
I happily pay less, and explain why I needed them to the guy, who appeared to Hungarian, though I’m terrible with nationalities.
When I mentioned I got my parts off the internet, the guy looked like I spit on his shoe. He really looked hurt that I hadn’t come to him in my time of need.
“Why you would shop on internet? Why not you would check local prices? Tell me what you got, and I will tell you what we could have sold it for.”
So I tell him, and he checks his price book, and explains to me in his kick-ass little accent why it would have been better to buy through him, and I was so impressed by the guy that I told him I’d be sure to check his store the next time I wanted some parts. We shook hands and I walked out.
WE NEED MORE ECCENTRIC PEOPLE WITH COOL ACCENTS RUNNING OUR SHOPS!!!
