Due to the passage of some Senate bill, which changes the anti-webcasting rules in some way I don’t really understand, SomaFM is broadcasting again! Check them out! They’ve got 128 Kbps streams, but I can tell you that the 56 Kbps streams aren’t noticably worse, because I have to listen to them during the day, due to limited bandwidth. Steve really digs their Secret Agent broadcast, but the poorly-recorded james bond quotes between songs usually just bug me. Personally, I listen to Groove Salad most of the time.

Yeah! Right on!
I miss Downtempo’s Afternoon nap. Is it still around?

Sorta… they had to cut back to a single, low-quality Live365.com stream. But if you go to the links page here, there’s a link to some streaming DJ sets he posted.

That Senate bill is also delaying something like $60,000 in *back* royalities my former college station (KDVS) would have to pay. It’s insane. We broadcast at 9200 watts and happen to have streams too… and suddenly they wanted something like 3 years retroactive royalty payment… but to whom??? Not really sure… apparently the FCC… because KDVS focused in on underground labels and bands.
I’m glad things like SomaFM are back because of this too… the DMCA thing is just absurd.

But they’re all in disgusting RealAudio. Is there any alternative to RealPlayer for listening to these?

When I load Afternoon Nap, it opens up in WinAmp for me…
