Excellent question, Andrew! The answer, unfortunately, is "it depends" on the comp. Ideally, the comp is relatively uncomplicated, and you can say something like "we estimate this work would take about 4 hours."

I know that seems like a lot to ask, but this is something you only ask your serious applicants, after you've already weeded out the bad resumes and stuff.

As for coming onsite, I personally would say let them work at home, or wherever they're most comfortable. I would think that working onsite would freak some people out.

So, how many hours, within a range, are you anticipating applicants to spend on this "interview production" work? Should they do it onsite during the interview to closely simulate the real environment?
