This seemed to come out of left field for me, too. Since it happened over the weekend, I missed the buildup and only caught the aftermath. But after watching the ad, I had to agree with the consensus; as a parent who spent considerable time carrying my daughter when she was younger, I've been in the position of being a harried parent. The ad felt, to me, like so much unwarranted advice from a total stranger--something parents, especially new parents--are barraged with from passersby in the streets, elderly ladies in the grocery stores, even friends. None of it is necessarily bad advice, but when you're already struggling to do right by your kid, it's hard to remain calm when it feels like folks are attacking your choices--which is exactly how this ad felt.

Further complicating things, the ad team used the "animated text" software that's been all over youtube (google "Pulp Fiction Typography" [not at all safe for work or sensitive ears] if you haven't seen it already), so a lot of internet-savvy folks were upset that the ad was A) condescending and B) blatantly derivative.

In an era where even my favorite bar is going out of their way to connect with customers through the internet, companies small and large simply can't afford to ignore the internet, and the consequences for a misstep can be huge.

At the same time ... any publicity can be good publicity. How many more folks have heard about this because it was controversial? It would be interesting to see some sales figures over the past few weeks and see if all of this ultimately helped or hurt Motrin's numbers.
