You Can't Paint It!

I went down once into the [particle] accelerator at CERN in Geneva and we were driving around the accelerator ring in an electric golf cart and the guy was explaining that they’re out pursuing the pi meson or whatever. And he said “Quite often we have accidents down here because people are driving the 27 kilometer line of this tube and they just zone out and crash into the wall.”

So I said, “Why don’t you put in some murals to break the visual monotony?” And then he just stared like I’d come from Mars.

I said “Look, it’s lit 24 hours, right, why don’t you put in some houseplants? Just kind of humanize the interface a little bit. I mean, this is so punishingly monotonous that you’re actually harming people.”

The guy’s brain just couldn’t go there.

“It’s a physics instrument! You can’t paint it!”

Zoe is Two Months Old

Dear Zoe,
It has now been two months since you were born… Well, actually, it’s more like two and a half. Things have been a bit hectic around here lately, and I wasn’t able to get the second newsletter written on time. With one month under our belts, your mom and I felt pretty confident about this whole parenting thing, but month two had a few surprises in store for us, between your first illness and us struggling with the balance between working and playing now that we’re parents.

Visit Cascadia

Visit Cascadia

The guys I work with at Pop Art just launched a site they’ve been working on for quite awhile now, and I’m really excited to finally be able to talk about it. The site is VisitCascadia.com, and it’s a promotional site for the new Freightliner truck, the Cascadia, framed as a site for a city populated entirely by truckers. It’s really funny, and full of tiny little details everywhere you look. Be sure to check out the extra-tall garages on the town map, the movie showing at the drive-in, and the Request-O-Matic, in which a concerned citizen will email your boss recommending that he buy you a Cascadia.
