We're Doing Alright

Just a quick post to reassure everyone that we’re doing alright. We had a rough few days, but we had a lot of help from our family, and we’re past the worst of it now. We’re taking it easy this weekend, and then Annie’s going back to work on Monday. Later on, she’ll be adding a section to the big post with some more details of her experiences. Right now, she’s too wrapped up in her new copy of Katamari Damacy that I bought her today.

It’s strange, but in this midst of this one piece of really bad news, everything else was going pretty well for us. Annie had finally worked out all the health insurance nonsense we were going through, and I’ve been getting a lot of work through Aquent. My new weblog design came online, and has been well received. I’ve got an interview coming up for a web production position with DEQ, and steady temp work for the next couple of weeks. And coolest of all, an illustration I did a couple years ago is appearing as part of a photomontage in the New York Times this weekend! I’ll have a blog post on all of these topics soon.

Thank you for all of your well-wishes and good thoughts.

We Lost The Baby

I’m sorry that I haven’t posted anything in a few days. Things around here have been overwhelming, to say the least. On Tuesday, we went to the midwives’ because Annie was concerned about bleeding. The midwife confirmed our fears that Annie might be having a miscarriage, and referred us to get an ultrasound. By that evening, we got the call back from the midwife confirming that the baby had stopped growing at seven weeks (which was 3-4 weeks ago). We had a really rough time telling our parents, but we’re doing as well as can be expected in the circumstances.

The thing that surprised me was finding out how incredibly commonplace this is. The midwife said that 1 in every 4 reported pregnancies ends in miscarriage. I also didn’t know that this is sort of a defense mechanism for the body if anything goes wrong in the development process. Knowing things like this helps, a little.

At this point, we have no reason to think this is because of anything we did, or that things would go poorly if we get pregnant again. We will definitely be trying again at some point, but we’re trying to take things one step at a time for now.

That’s the overview, and you can feel free to stop reading here. In the interest of both getting everything out and in maybe helping other people who have to go through this, I’m going to keep writing in more detail. So, fair warning, it’s going to get a bit more personal after this.

Redesign Complete

When I can hold my eyes open again, I’ll post a writeup about the new design. It’s 95% done right now. I just need to apply the design to the gallery and my portfolio, fix the broken PNG images when you view the site in IE, and work on the front page of the site (currently redirecting to the blog).
