Okay, so the first week of work was a bit overwhelming, what with the multiple-hours-of-commuting (compared to the 20 feet I was used to), but all in all, it went well, and I will resume posting shortly.
On a side note, is anyone having trouble with the site, or commenting? I’ve heard a few troubling remarks, but I haven’t seen any evidence of it, personally. If you can’t comment, drop me an email.
Update: When in doubt, blame Internet Explorer. When I open the site in IE, it looks fine. But when I go to a permalink page (such as when I want to comment) the page comes up blank. I’ll work on this. In the meantime, *cough*GetABetterBrowser*cough* oh, excuse me… just bear with me and I’ll have the problem fixed shortly.
On another side note, what do you people do for lunch at work? I don’t want to spend money on lunch everyday, but I can’t think of very many things to brown-bag to work besides sandwiches, which will get old fast. I have access to a fridge, microwave, and watercooler/hot-water-dispenser thingy.
I have a favorite sandwich I bring for lunch most every day. It’s so yummy to me, it never gets old. But, when I need to change up a bit, there’s a few standards I keep ready:
Mac and Cheese in a tupperware reheats well enough from the day before.
Soup in a can. (most have pop tops these days)
Top Ramen microwaves just as well as cup o’ soup, and costs half as much. (but it’s still Top Ramen, which I can only eat occasionally)
Burritos/Chimichangas from Costco, baby!
Vanilla yogurt + Cheerios is a favorite lunch of mine when I’m at the lab all day. It’s surprisingly filling and cheap if you go generic. Good with a side of just about any other office-friendly food, such as baby carrots or jello cups.
That’s the age-old dilemma. On top of baggability, you want to consider healthfulness whenever you work an office job. I had an office job for two months in New York where I was sitting around and I kept buying junk food, and I gained like ten pounds.
We have a kitchen at work with cupboards, a fridge, a microwave, and a toaster oven. Safeway always has some brand of frozen food on 4 for $10 special each week, so I eat some kind of frozen entree most days for lunch. Not great, but better than the Taco Bell I was getting before that, and more filling.
The other thing we do is keep cheese, salsa and chips on hand, so every few days we’ll make a batch of nachos in the toaster oven. That’s a favorite, but probably not applicable to your current situation.
I agree with urn, though. A good sandwich just doesn’t get old for me.
