Tech Support Hell

My new video card arrived yesterday, and I had the fun of discovering that it doesn’t work. The manufacturer’s website (which is horrible) is confusing and full of typos, which isn’t exactly inspiring me with confidence. Nor is the fact that the only phone number they list is in Taiwan, so I have to wait for the email tech support to write me back. I hate email tech support, because it always takes three times as long while the technicians suggest you try all the normal things like installing drivers and stuff. My mac has made me even more intolerant of hardware that doesn’t just work out of the box.

That’s exactly the kind of crap that prompted me, upon the death of both Molli’s and my old computers, to order one from Gateway. Not only did it work right out of the box, but it came in a pretty snazzy box (and I’m talking about the case, not the cow-print shipping box . . . although that’s pretty snappy, too).

Yes, and that’s why I ordered my Dell. But they don’t usually ship with a top-of-the-line video card capable of playing worthwhile games, which is why I’m trying to upgrade.

It’s now been 24 hours since I wrote to tech support. If I don’t hear from them tomorrow, I’m just going to try to exchange the card.
