The US Department of

The US Department of Homeland Security has provided us with a handy website containing many tips about what to do if exposed to various forms of terrorist attacks, including useful tips like running away from nuclear explosions and not breathing in chemical fumes or playing with dead animals.

The site is suprisingly well-designed, though it has inspired some clever parodies already. (that’s five links there, not one big one)

And in related news, Sir Isaac Newton says that the world will end in 2060.

Don’t forget that the Mayans calendar ends on December 21, 2012! [ February 24th, 2003 at 4:01 pm

This takes me back to 1954 and Faulkner School, where in first grade we were taught to protect ourselves from a Soviet nuclear bomb by sitting beneath our school desks.

Once the nuclear explosion was past, civil defense authorities would declare “all clear”, at which point we were to scurry straight home … on foot.

At 6 years old we were too young to realize that disaster kit flashlights had no real place in this naive scenario.

We’d all have glowed nicely in the dark.

49 years later and we’re playing the same game again. History *does* repeat itself.

57 years? Not soon enough! Like someone else has already mentioned, the mayan calendar ends in nine years. That sounds more like it to me! Nine years should give me some time to get a few things done that will make me feel better about reaching the inevitable end.
