I feel like a character

I feel like a character in a video game who just picked up a health pack.

Last week was stressful. This weekend, I just had fun. My stress levels are down, and I’m happy again. I’m even looking forward to starting work on an art project I have, and finishing up some web stuff I’ve been doing in my spare time.

Annie was with her mom this weekend, so instead of kicking the boys out by 2 or 3 AM like I normally do on Saturday, we stayed up all night. We played lots and lots of Worms2, and even got Steve in on the action. After Steve left, we sat down and played some multiplayer Halo deathmatch, which was a blast. There’s about 20 various styles of deathmatch, including my favorite, rocket tag (it’s not really tag, I just call it that because you get nothing but rockets). Then we played Jet Set Radio until we met Steve at House of Louie for Dim Sum at noon.

Last night, I dreamed I was a character in Jet Set Halo. I rode a skateboard instead of (stupid) rollerblades, but everything was definitely cartoon-rendered. Also, DJ Professor K, the narrator from Jet Set Radio Future, would periodically shout “check out that style, baby!” as I busted some extravagant half-pipe trick. After a couple minutes of half-pipe, Professor K announced that there was an alien skater inbound, and one of the Covenant Elites showed up on a plasma-powered hoverboard and started competing with me for the half-pipe crown!

It was sort of like Joust: the goal of the game was to catch a higher air over the other guy, and knock him off his board at the top of your arc. Angrily picking myself up after one such clash, down in the flat of the ramp, I seized the Covenant’s board and hurled it off the ramp and across the yard (this was war, after all). That ought to set him back a few seconds!

    Man.

The games industry needs to agree on a standard so characters and physics can migrate between games. It’s long past due.
