Christmas 2001

Happy Holidays to everyone!

I hope you’re all having as great a time as Annie and I have had, though hopefully with considerably more sleep. We did our usual weekend with Annie’s family, including Christmas Eve, and then catching an 8am train after a bleary-eyed gift exchange at 6:30am. My parents picked us up at the Portland train station at 11am, and we did the two-hour drove to Eugene to have Christmas with my family. We just got back about a half hour ago, and I thought I should post while it’s still technically Christmas.

The reason I’m exhausted is because when I’m at Annie’s house, her brothers (and their friends) and I all hook together some computers and engage in some inter-active video gaming! We couldn’t resist the urge to get one last night of Quake III in before I left on Christmas morning, so I went to bed at 2:30am. Woo! Four hours of sleep! I’m all jittery from a mixture of lack of sleep, caffeine, cold pills, turkey and apple pie. But we had a fantastic time seeing our families and all our friends (even Urn and Pat!). Now I’m going to end this rambling post and head to bed.

Lord of the Rings and DSL

Well, tonight is the night that KT and Sean and Annie and Zach and I all go see Lord of the Rings. Steve wasn’t able to get tickets in time, and he made me promise not to tell him about the movie.

Yesterday my DSL finally came online. My original 10 business day installation period ballooned up to five weeks, with more screw-ups on Qwest’s part than I can count. They got my ISP wrong (twice), they got my account wrong (640kps instead of 256kps), they never called me when anything was wrong, they were resistant to making changes. It was just a horrible experience. I’m tempted to make a powerpoint presentation about the quality of their service.

About the only positive experience I’ve had has been with my ISP, DSLnorthwest, who have gone out of their way to make everything simple and easy for me.

But the ability to work from home really makes it all worth it (in the abstract sense… I still hate Qwest). My alarm went off at 9:50 this morning. I rolled out of bed, brushed my teeth, and walked to work… in the next room. It’s fantastic. And of course, having a static IP address means I can do neat stuff like stream music from my computer. I’ll probably be leaving this stream on all the time, so if you’re ever interested in what music I’m playing, just point your winamp at [http://radio.spaceninja.com:8000].

Edit 10/26/2005: Due to changes in the law, I stopped the radio broadcast shortly after posting this, and it’s no longer available.

Lisa Loeb Concert

Tonight, for the first time in about three years, Lisa Loeb played in Portland. KT and I have often joked that we’re probably the only two Lisa Loeb fans in Portland, as evidenced by the fact that she never plays here. We figured we’d be proven wrong tonight, since she wasn’t opening for anyone, but once we got there, we found out she hadn’t brought her whole band, just one extra guy to play backup guitar. It was still a fun concert though, and the third song she played was probably the highlight of the night.

Okay, this next song is from our upcoming album… (Lisa begins playing a slow song… about 30 seconds into it, she stops playing abruptly) …Maybe this isn’t the best time to play this song. It sounds like they’re washing the dishes. (in the background, you can hear someone spraying off the dishes from the grill) …Man, what are they washing back there? It sounds like they’re rinsing out a big tub… a big plastic tub. I guess we shouldn’t play such a slow song now. (begins strumming guitar again) …something a little more upbeat… like… the Plastic Tub song! It goes like this… (Lisa begins imitating the sound of the spray on the tub while playing guitar. Everyone laughs) Hmmm… what song could we play? (woman in front row yells “PLAY THE TUB SONG!”) …The what? …what? Tab song? …tab? Oh! Oh! The TUB song! Man, I thought you were saying Tab. …Y’all have got some thick accents. I’m from Texas, and I was like ‘tab song? what tab song?’

After that, she improvise this totally funny song about how she wanted some wine, and she deserved it because the only bad thing she’d had today was a few donuts in Seattle.
